Flow and Oscillation
During The Residency Project in Pasadena, the artists presented a multi-media performance that invited audience participation, tailored to the residency site. The entire work was divided into three chapters.
Chapter One: Embrace, From Day to Night
At sunset, the artists invited the audience to pair up and embrace each other, holding low-frequency speakers between them. Many low-frequency sounds, imperceptible to the human ear, were felt through vibrations by the body. "We can feel sound with our bodies, not just our ears." This 15-minute chapter offered participants an opportunity for a prolonged embrace, allowing them to feel each other, collaborate physically, and experience vibrations together.
Chapter Two: Flowing Through the City, Into the Sea
As the vibrations from the low-frequency speakers worn by the audience began to subside, the sound of another chapter emerged. Projections and installations on the ground slowly lit up and joined the performance. Guided by the artist, the audience placed the low-frequency speakers back on the ground. The space was transformed into a "map" using projections, light, installations, and sound. The sounds and flowing images led the audience's thoughts from the Los Angeles River and the city to the river's mouth and the ocean.
Chapter Three: Vibrating on Us and Them
The artists used the low-frequency speakers from the first chapter, which had conveyed vibrations to the audience, for an improvised performance with various objects in the space that could be made to vibrate and produce sound. Finally, as night fell completely, the sounds and lights gradually faded away.
