The Land – South Sea

The Land – South Sea, 2023
canvas, ink, acrylic, oil pastel, wax, metal powder, 55 × 35 in.

As part of the immersive multimedia installation, Gardening the Ruins (2023), The Land – South Sea translates and retains the movements from the installation onto a canvas.

Geographical theory and strange creatures from a Chinese classic text Classic of Mountain and Sea served as an inspiration for these paintings where we can see an infinite loop between the land, sea, and the fabled creatures colliding on this landscape.

This painting was accomplished by the artist and her handmade custom electronics of motors and mechanical gardening tools. The traces left by the machine movement changed the landscape of the work, marks left through time and repetition.
